Percentage Change and Ratio Formula

Percentage Change = ((New Value - Original Value) / |Original Value|) * 100

Percentage changes are always calculated relative to the starting baseline. Absolute values in the denominator ensure correct sign direction when calculating gains or losses from negative balances.

Worked Example: Retail Price Markdown Example

Input:

Original Price: $120.00 | Discount Rate: 25.0%

Output:

Sale Price: $90.00 | Total Savings: $30.00

Calculated as: Savings = $120 * 0.25 = $30.00. Sale Price = $120 - $30 = $90.00.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?

Percentage change measures the relative proportion of change from a starting value. Percentage points represent the simple arithmetic subtraction between two percentages (e.g. an interest rate moving from 5% to 6% is a 1 percentage point increase, but a 20% relative increase).

Why does a 50% loss require a 100% gain to break even?

Because the starting baseline changes. If an investment of $100 loses 50%, the balance drops to $50. To return from $50 back to $100 requires adding $50, which is 100% of your new $50 baseline.

How do you calculate percentage of a total in your head?

Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place to the left, then multiply or divide. For 15%, take 10% and add half of that amount.
